Biobase careers: remote jobs, culture and where they hire

San Diego startup brokering biospecimens, whole-slide images and clinical data on an agentic platform, hiring product engineers remotely in the US at published $90k to $230k bands.

Who backs Biobase

Biobase announced a strategic investment from BJC Health in January 2026, positioning BJC as a deployment partner for its clinical data platform across the health system. In July 2026 it announced its initial pre-seed round, led by Nina Capital with DigiTx Partners and Washington Research Foundation participating. Round sizes have not been disclosed.

What is Biobase?

Biobase calls itself the agentic system for clinical data. In practice it is a brokerage: health systems, labs and biobanks put their biospecimens, whole-slide images and the clinical metadata attached to them to work through Biobase, and pharma, biotech and AI teams buy research-ready access on the other side. The company normalizes and indexes data arriving in incompatible formats (EHR, LIMS, HL7, FHIR, pathology slides, genomics), runs a federated model where data stays with the institution that holds it, and builds HIPAA-aligned de-identification, lineage and audit trails into the pipeline. On top of that supply chain it runs AI agents, both for customers (cohort discovery, natural language querying) and against its own operations (lead follow-up, briefings, monitoring).

The company is young and small: headquartered in San Diego, California, with a team of about a dozen people as of October 2026 per its LinkedIn page. The founding team comes from pathology AI and healthcare data companies including Paige, Tempus, Arterys, Danaher and PictorLabs, and it says it is already working with health systems, labs and technology partners, including a strategic relationship with BJC Health, one of the largest academic health systems in the US.

Who founded Biobase

Todd Parker, Co-founder and CEO. An MBA with a career in pathology AI and diagnostics commercialization, with prior roles at Paige, Danaher and PictorLabs before co-founding Biobase.

Jonathan Maddison, Co-founder and CTO. Previously in engineering at OTTO, Paige and Grasshopper before co-founding Biobase.

Sam Seymour, Co-founder and CPO. A master of engineering with prior product work at medical imaging and precision medicine companies Arterys, Paige and Tempus. Both open engineering roles report to him.

Terence O'Keeffe, Co-founder and COO. Previously at PwC, Walgreens and Elephas before co-founding Biobase.

Where does Biobase hire remotely?

Headquarters are in San Diego, California, but both open engineering roles are remote. The careers page lists them as Remote (US) with travel for offsites and site visits; the company's September 2026 Hacker News post listed them as remote in the US and Canada.

Why Biobase is exciting to work for

The engineering roles are unusually broad by design. Biobase hires Technical Product Engineers who act as PM, designer and engineer for whatever they take on: the brokerage platform itself, the data pipeline that takes specimen, slide and clinical data in from suppliers and labs, the internal platform that lets non-engineers stand up their own agents (permissions, evals, cost control, guardrails for sensitive data), and the portals for buyers, suppliers and labs. The postings are explicit that done is not merged; done is when the manual process stops happening.

Pay bands are published and the company says it pays at the top of the market for each level: $150,000 to $230,000 plus meaningful equity for the senior role, and $90,000 to $170,000 plus equity for the early-career role, with salary and equity combinations to choose between. The early-career posting is deliberately open on background (self-taught, bootcamp, CS degree, research lab, career changers) and selective on the bar: it wants people who have built something that someone else actually used.

Biobase vibe check

Office
Remote in the US, with travel for offsites and site visits to the labs and health systems on the supply side.
AI tooling
Builds with Claude Code daily against curated internal context; fluency with AI tools, plus skepticism about their output, is an explicit hiring criterion.
Team
About a dozen people as of October 2026, founded by operators from Paige, Tempus, Arterys and Danaher.

What to expect from the culture

Biobase describes itself as AI-native in practice rather than as a talking point: the team builds with Claude Code every day against internal context it has invested real effort in, and credits that for how much surface area a team this size can hold. It wants people fluent with AI tooling and skeptical of it, with a strong instinct for when the output is confidently wrong. Writing matters; on a team this size, clear updates and clear questions are how work gets coordinated.

The careers page frames the ethos as building the thing that removes the work rather than throwing people at it, with warmth, directness and reverence for the mission. Both open roles sit in product and report to the CPO, working alongside a lead engineer and people in operations and sales. The postings warn the roles are not for people who want a ticket queue, someone else's spec or a stack that stays still. Expect unfamiliar domain words (specimen, block, accession, manifest) and an expectation to get curious rather than stuck.

How to get hired at Biobase

As of October 2026 there are two openings, both full-time and remote in the US with travel for offsites and site visits: Senior Technical Product Engineer ($150,000 to $230,000 plus meaningful equity) and Technical Product Engineer, an early-career role ($90,000 to $170,000 plus equity). Both are listed at https://biobase.ai/careers. The company's September 2026 Hacker News post listed the roles as remote in the US and Canada, while the careers page says Remote (US).

Applications go by email to jobs@biobase.ai, and the postings ask for links over resumes with no cover letter. For the senior role: something you built that eliminated manual work and what happened after it shipped, plus something you wrote (a spec, RFC, design doc or postmortem) where you made a messy problem precise. For the early-career role: one thing you built that saved someone real work, who used it and what happened. The stack is Python and FastAPI, TypeScript and React, Postgres and Azure.
