A $4.6 million seed led by Lowercarbon Capital with New System Ventures, Overture, Ardent Venture Partners, Three Cairns Group and QED's Bolt program, plus individual investors including KKR co-founder Henry Kravis and Gallatin Point's Lee Sachs, funded the April 2023 launch; a $4.25 million seed extension led by Ardent in June 2023 brought in strategic investors Ørsted, LS Power, Hartree Partners, Canapi and Commonweal Ventures. Kate Karas, the first general counsel at Chime, joined the board in November 2025.

What is Crux?

Crux is a capital platform for clean energy and manufacturing projects in the United States. It started in April 2023 as a marketplace for the transferable tax credits created by the Inflation Reduction Act, then added a debt capital marketplace in March 2025 and tax equity and preferred equity investing later that year, alongside advisory services and a market intelligence practice that publishes semi-annual reports on the sector. Its subsidiary Crux Capital Securities is a FINRA member and SEC-registered broker-dealer that works only with institutional counterparties.

The site counts 185+ transactions executed across the capital stack, an $85 billion transaction dataset, a $6 billion-plus proprietary pipeline in tax equity and preferred equity, and deal closes that run 30%+ faster through its data room. Customers are developers, sponsors, manufacturers, tax credit buyers, lenders and the tax advisors and law firms around them; over 40 law firms co-develop standardized documents and AI tools with the company, and transaction volume on the platform went from $8.5 billion in the first half of 2024 to more than $20 billion in the first half of 2025, with the fastest deal closing in 17 days.

Why Crux is exciting to work for

Crux entered a market at its inception. Transferable tax credits did not exist before the Inflation Reduction Act, and Alfred Johnson described the founding moment plainly: "The summer of 2022, Allen Kramer and I became obsessed with the frustrating inadequacy of clean energy capital markets." Three years later the company sits in the middle of a market it helped shape: its own mid-year 2026 report puts tax credit transfers at $21 billion in the first half of the year, with a record $14.9 billion in the second quarter, and Crux data is what Utility Dive, Latitude Media and Heatmap quote when they cover the sector.

Pay is printed on every posting, and postings state the company is "profitable and growing exponentially" and has closed over 130 transactions in the last two years, so the roles are funded by revenue rather than runway. In July 2026 Newsweek named Crux one of America's Greatest Startup Workplaces, at a headcount the company put at 115.

The company runs on AI in practice rather than as a slogan. Postings describe the operations team building automation with HubSpot, Claude Code and n8n, the first AI Product Engineer hire is tasked with rebuilding diligence from first principles, and Johnson has said the key to scaling clean energy investment "lies in leveraging AI to embed human expertise and market intelligence directly into software tools that ensure accuracy, flag risks, and expedite deal closures."

What to expect from the culture

Five written values appear on the careers page and in every posting: care for each other, build and improve rapidly, focus unremittingly on customers, demonstrate ownership, and convene a team that reflects the breadth of experiences in the country. The company defines the second one as "We move quickly. To do that, we focus, consistently ask ourselves if we are prioritizing the right things, and execute them as best as possible," and the fourth as "We are all owners of Crux. This is our team, our company, our product and we show that to each other." The stated growth model is direct: "We grow quickly by giving extremely talented people a lot of responsibility."

The team mixes finance and technology on purpose. Postings describe it as experts in energy, tax, finance, government and technology, and the leadership hires announced in September 2026 came from Apollo, M&T Bank, ExxonMobil, Mizuho and CIBC, reporting to a chief capital officer who spent 23 years at RBC. Johnson's own view of leadership, from a 2023 interview, is that great leaders are "bold, decisive, empathetic, and consistent," that "People are everything," and that a leader's inconsistency "absolutely creates insecure organizations". Every posting ends with an equal opportunity statement and an invitation to say how you would contribute.

How to get hired at Crux

Crux hires through an Ashby job board with 16 open roles in September 2026, most of them commercial: tax credit markets, tax investor coverage, investments, industry coverage and partnerships, plus operations roles, an executive assistant and the company's first AI Product Engineer. A standing "Build Your Role" posting takes applications from people who do not see a fit and asks them to define the role themselves. Experience bars are explicit: 4+ years of full-stack work for the engineer, 5 to 10 years for the revenue strategy lead, 6+ for business operations and 14+ years in tax, accounting, legal practice or tax-advantaged investing for managing directors.

Commercial roles expect around 25% travel to conferences, partner briefings and closings. The AI Product Engineer posting lists what they hope to see: hackathons and side projects, agents that actually work, a prior startup or "rocket ship", and someone who "can quickly find the 80/20 solution and move on". Several postings add that Crux is "very open on compensation for the right candidate".
