Deya careers: remote jobs, culture and where they hire

Clinician-led NYC startup building a connected eye-care platform: patients capture eye images and symptoms on their phone, doctors manage care remotely, and the result is the largest dataset of smartphone eye images.

Hiring in NYC (hybrid) and remotely

What is Deya?

Deya (deya.health) is building a longitudinal data layer for eye care. Its thesis, stated plainly in its job postings, is that most AI in healthcare is chasing scribes and diagnostics while almost no one captures what actually happens to patients over time. Deya's platform sits between doctor and patient: a patient app captures 4K eye images with AI-guided smartphone photography ("eye selfies"), symptom logs and treatment adherence check-ins, while an AI-powered Doctor Hub turns that stream into progress reports for the eye doctor. The model lets eye care professionals manage acute and chronic anterior segment conditions remotely and asynchronously, in a way the company says can be compensated through CPT billing.

The company launched its platform publicly in November 2025 after a period in stealth, is piloting with eye doctors and collecting real patient data, and says it already holds the largest dataset of eye images captured on smartphones. In 2026 it entered a sponsorship agreement with the Illinois College of Optometry to fund research using smartphone-acquired anterior segment images to train its clinical decision support models, with three ICO faculty investigators leading the study. The team is clinician-led, with an ophthalmologist CEO, an optometrist chief commercialization officer and in-house clinicians defining ground truth for the AI work.

Who founded Deya

Jovi Boparai, MD, Co-founder and CEO. Ophthalmic surgeon turned founder: University of Pittsburgh, Weill Cornell Medicine, ophthalmology residency at Wills Eye Hospital, then ophthalmic surgeon at the US Department of Veterans Affairs. Co-founded the eye-care company CorneaCare in 2021, where he is also CEO, and started Deya in September 2023. Describes a personal journey overcoming eye problems as the root of his patient-first approach.

Carl Murray, Co-founder and COO. Deya's co-founder, platform architect and COO, and also co-founder and COO of CorneaCare alongside Boparai. Leads product and operations at Deya.

Where does Deya hire remotely?

Deya is based in New York City. As of October 2026 all three open engineering roles are listed as NYC / Hybrid / Remote, and the careers page says most roles offer full remote flexibility. The company does not publish a list of countries it hires from; the current team is US-based, so ask about location constraints when applying.

Why Deya is exciting to work for

All three open engineering roles are high-ownership, zero-to-one positions on a small core team. The software engineer role shapes the technical foundation of the company across Next.js, backend services, cloud infrastructure, agentic workflows and computer vision pipelines. The mobile role owns the patient app end to end, including the camera and guided-capture pipeline that must produce clinically usable images from a handheld phone. The AI role is the technical owner of both halves of the stack: vision models trained and validated on Deya's proprietary clinical data, and LLM systems that reason over longitudinal patient records.

The unusual asset is the data: a proprietary, growing clinical dataset tied to symptoms, treatments and outcomes over time, which most research groups cannot access, plus in-house optometrists and ophthalmologists to define ground truth. Because Deya controls capture, engineers can improve the data itself rather than model around its limits. Postings list competitive salary plus equity; specific pay bands are not published.

Deya vibe check

Office
New York based, with roles listed as NYC / Hybrid / Remote; the careers page says most roles offer full remote flexibility and that the company cares about output, not where you sit.
Team
Small core team working alongside in-house optometrists and ophthalmologists; roughly a handful of people as of 2026, with expansion planned.
Perks
Conference budget and learning stipend, with salary, equity and benefits described as benchmarked to top health-tech companies.

What to expect from the culture

Deya describes itself as clinician-led, and the structure backs that up: the CEO is an eye surgeon, the chief commercialization officer is an optometrist who co-founded and ran the practice management company RevolutionEHR, and clinicians work directly with engineers on ground truth and validation. The careers page emphasizes mission (every line of code moves the needle on real patient outcomes), output over location, and a team small enough that contributions are visible and opinions shape direction.

AI tooling is part of the daily development workflow, and the postings are candid about expectations: engineers should already work this way, have real opinions about where the tools earn their keep, and take full responsibility for reviewing and testing what comes out of them. For the AI role that goes further, with the job described as keeping current on model capability, running new models against internal evals, and saying when something built six months ago should be thrown out. Published perks include a conference budget and learning stipend, with compensation described as benchmarked to top health-tech companies.

How to get hired at Deya

As of October 2026 Deya lists three engineering roles at https://deya.health/careers/, all posted August 17, 2026 and all full-time: Software Engineer (AI x Healthcare), Mobile Engineer (React Native, Swift and Kotlin), and AI Engineer (Computer Vision + LLMs). Each is listed as NYC / Hybrid / Remote, and the careers page says most roles offer full remote flexibility. Applications go through a short form on each posting (name, email, LinkedIn or portfolio, optional resume, cover note), and the company says it responds within a few business days.

The postings ask for evidence of shipped work rather than credentials: the software role wants strong builders comfortable across frontend, backend and infrastructure with production AI/ML experience; the AI role wants production computer vision and hands-on LLM work (prompting, evals, retrieval, tool use) with rigor about evaluation in a clinical context; the mobile role wants React Native depth with the ability to drop into Swift and Kotlin for camera work. Healthcare technology and EHR integration experience is listed as a bonus, not a requirement. Interview process details are not published.

Deya hiring FAQ

What does Deya do?

Patients use a smartphone app to capture AI-guided 4K eye images, log symptoms and track treatment adherence; eye doctors review AI-generated progress reports in a web-based Doctor Hub and manage conditions remotely between visits. The company says it holds the largest dataset of eye images captured on smartphones and is piloting with eye doctors.

How much does Deya pay engineers?

Deya does not publish pay bands. The postings list competitive salary plus equity, and the careers page describes compensation as benchmarked to top health-tech companies.

What is Deya's tech stack?

Next.js and backend services on cloud infrastructure for the platform, React Native with native Swift and Kotlin for the patient and doctor apps, computer vision pipelines for smartphone ocular imaging, and LLM and agentic systems over longitudinal patient data. AI tools are part of the daily development workflow, and applications run through a HubSpot-backed form on the careers site.

Who is behind Deya, and who backs it?

Deya is clinician-led: co-founder and CEO Jovi Boparai is an ophthalmic surgeon, co-founder Carl Murray is COO and platform architect, Scott Jens (co-founder and former CEO of RevolutionEHR) joined the executive team and was named Chief Commercialization Officer in September 2026, and Andrew Garrett is the founding AI engineer. Deya has not publicly announced any funding rounds or investors.

How do I apply to Deya?

Through https://deya.health/careers/, where each role has a short application form asking for your details, a LinkedIn or portfolio link, a cover note and an optional resume.
