What is Fieldguide?

Fieldguide builds an AI-native platform for audit and advisory firms: engagement management, document handling, request tracking and workpapers on one system, with a family of Field Agents that plan audits, test controls, draft procedures and review evidence while the practitioner stays in the loop. Field Auditor and Field Orchestrator are live, Field Planner and Field Reviewer are due later in 2026, Field Financials (three agents that draft, validate and roll forward financial statements) started shipping in August 2026, and Fieldguide MCP exposes live engagement data inside Claude, Copilot and Gemini. The platform covers financial audit, SOC, employee benefit plan and IT audit, ESG, risk advisory, cybersecurity and privacy, corporate internal audit and, with FedRAMP work underway, federal customers.

Founded in 2020 and part of Y Combinator's S20 batch, Fieldguide is used by more than half of the top 100 US CPA firms, including several Big Four members, with KPMG, BDO, RSM US, Baker Tilly, Grant Thornton, Cherry Bekaert, Aprio, Wipfli, Mazars and CBIZ among named customers. The company says its agents save practitioners up to 75% of time on manual tasks, and Goldman Sachs reported clients seeing 30% to 40% efficiency gains when it invested. Headcount was 160 in February 2026 with a plan to double within a year; about a quarter of employees are former audit practitioners.

Who founded Fieldguide

Jin Chang, CEO and co-founder. CPA who spent five years at EY in audit and advisory, then co-founded Bitbutter (originally Lydia Tax, a cryptocurrency tax app backed by Berkeley SkyDeck) while in grad school, and was Chief of Staff at Atrium, Justin Kan's legal tech startup, until it shut down in early 2020. MBA from UC Berkeley Haas and a B.S. from the University of Southern California; named to Accounting Today's Top 100 Most Influential People.

Chris Szymansky, CTO and co-founder. VP of Engineering, Product and Design at Atrium from 2018 to 2020, where he met Jin Chang. Before that he joined The Resumator in Pittsburgh as an early software engineer in 2012 and rose to CTO of the company after it rebranded to JazzHR (2015 to 2018), following design and engineering roles at Fireman Creative and co-founding Vivo in 2008. Studied at the University of Pittsburgh.

Why Fieldguide is exciting to work for

Fieldguide is a rare vertical AI company with enterprise distribution already in place: half of the top 100 US accounting firms, Big Four accounts and a public-sector lane, so agents you ship land in front of real audit teams rather than pilots. Engineering postings describe design-partner firms and an embedded SOX expert using new agent features within days of them landing, and roles ask you to decide "where autonomy makes sense and where the auditor stays in the loop".

Engineering is run as an agent-native org by CTO Chris Szymansky. Forge, the internal platform that assembles context, spins up an isolated cloud dev environment and opens a pull request with verification evidence, raised merged PR throughput 40% in its first quarter, with Forge-authored PRs merging 1.3 to 1.6 times faster and no change in rollback rate. Product managers and designers ship production code, customer support troubleshoots with Claude Code, and postings for the audit team say plainly that they use Claude Code "extensively, and we expect this person to push that boundary further".

The company is scaling fast enough that early hires shape functions. A Director of Talent Acquisition posting frames the job as taking the team from 200 to 600+ employees, and the Ashby board listed 46 open roles in September 2026 across engineering, product, design, sales, implementation, support and finance. Pay bands are printed on every posting.

Fieldguide vibe check

Hours
The careers page says "We measure output, not hours logged" and postings list flexible work schedules; exceptions are stated per role, such as a support manager job fixed to 10am to 7pm Eastern and infrastructure engineers joining on-call for 24/7 availability.
Time off
Flexible PTO that, in the words of one posting, "people actually use"; Built In's employee-feedback summary notes that audit busy seasons and launches can push time off until after peaks (Built In, 2026).
Office
Bay Area staff work hybrid and everyone else is remote, with twice-yearly in-person offsites across the United States.
Pace
Fast is a named value and the design posting says "We move incredibly fast at Fieldguide"; Built In's summary cites employee reports of 50+ hour weeks around launches and customer busy seasons (Built In, 2026).
Equity
Stock options for everyone ("Everyone on the team has a stake in where this goes"); product and go-to-market roles add a bonus, and implementation roles add commission.
Notable
A double-digit percentage of engineering tickets already flow through background coding agents, with humans reviewing the pull requests.

What to expect from the culture

Fieldguide's values are spelled FFLOWI: Fearless ("The leading edge of AI has no playbook"), Fast ("We launch fast with excellence and iterate to perfection"), Lovable ("We deliver 11-star experiences for our customers"), Owners ("empowered to solve problems without red tape and run the business as owners"), Win-win and Inclusive. Winston C., a software engineer, puts the ownership part this way on the careers page: "Fieldguide enables the engineers to make engineering decisions, which allows for our product to grow in the right ways."

The mission is personal for the CEO. Jin Chang left the Big Four the way many auditors do: "Like the hundreds of thousands who quit the audit and advisory industry in recent years, I left feeling burnt out." Fieldguide's stated purpose is to improve the lives of the practitioners who, in his words, facilitate trust in commerce and capital markets, and roughly one in four employees came from that profession.

Postings are candid about fit. An internal audit engineering role lists "Not a fit if: you need a fully specified ticket to start" and "you'd rather not be in the room with customers and domain experts", the product operations role warns "If ambiguity slows you down, this isn't the role", and the design team says it "moves incredibly fast" and wants designers already using AI in their daily practice.

How to get hired at Fieldguide

Fieldguide hires through Ashby and posts many engineering roles as "All Levels", with the final level (mid, senior or staff) calibrated during interviews based on scope and demonstrated experience; forward-deployed engineers go through the same standard Software Engineer loop. Fieldguide does not publish a stage list; third-party interview guides describe a recruiter screen, a 45 to 60 minute technical round and a 45 minute behavioral round for engineers.

What they screen for is written into the postings: you already use AI coding tools as a core part of your workflow, you have "built AI products, not just called an LLM API", you are curious about evals and error analysis, and you can pick up audit domain concepts fast without needing to know them on day one. The Seoul team says capability and ambition matter more than seniority. Practitioner-facing roles (implementation, customer success engineering, methodology) ask for two to five years leading financial statement audits, SOX testing or internal controls work, so former auditors are hired directly into product and customer teams.
