What is KoBold Metals?

KoBold Metals is a mineral exploration and mine development company that uses AI models and its own sensors to find copper, lithium, nickel and cobalt deposits. Founded in 2018, it runs exploration programs in eight countries across a portfolio of more than 60 projects, and describes itself as the largest independent mineral exploration company and the largest exploration technology developer. Its data scientists and software engineers co-lead exploration programs with geologists: the science teams form hypotheses, quantify uncertainty about the subsurface, and design field programs to reduce it. Hardware built in-house includes the Hyperpod, a magnetic-field sensor flown under helicopters and small aircraft to produce 3D geological data, alongside software platforms named TerraShed and Machine Prospector.

Its first discovery is Mingomba, a copper deposit in Zambia's Copperbelt with ore grades around 5%, roughly ten times the global average, found for materially less than the industry's average exploration spend. KoBold and ZCCM-IH broke ground on the mine on 29 April 2026; it is expected to cost more than $2 billion, produce about 300,000 tonnes of copper a year and start output in the early 2030s. In 2026 the company also opened an office in Lubumbashi, launched a $50 million lithium exploration campaign in the Democratic Republic of Congo, and signed an agreement to digitize Burundi's geological data. Team members had made nearly 20 discoveries before joining, and postings put headcount at over 300 people across 12 countries.

Why KoBold Metals is exciting to work for

KoBold is one of the few places where a software engineer or data scientist's model gets tested by drilling a hole. Postings say engineers embed directly with exploration teams, whose users are their own colleagues. Past Data Systems projects include a structured ingest pipeline, on-demand curated DataKits and retrieval-augmented generation over unstructured exploration data. Kurt House put the thesis in one line to Berkeleyside: "We don't drill for metals, we drill for information."

The scale is unusual for a startup: a mine costing more than $2 billion in construction, exploration on five continents, and a team that mixes Silicon Valley engineers with exploration geologists who have made discoveries before. Josh Goldman told Berkeleyside the founders left oil and gas because "we decided we wanted to start working on the materials of the future."

KoBold Metals vibe check

Hours
Postings that mention time zones are specific: the IT platform role prefers Central or Eastern time, the Executive Assistant role runs on GMT for a London-based CIO, and treasury staff are asked to be flexible outside business hours when banks require it.
Time off
Postings list paid time off, paid sick time and parental leave alongside health, dental, vision, life and disability insurance and a home office stipend, without stating day counts.
Office
Remote-first: 30 of the 33 roles on the Greenhouse board are remote, while Mechatronics and Manufacturing Engineers must be able to work from the Berkeley office any day of the week.
Pace
Glassdoor reviewers surfaced in search highlights describe KoBold as "fast-moving" and "able to move from idea to real-world action quickly" despite its growth, under the heading "Move fast, take ownership, work with exceptional people".
Equity
Most postings list equity on top of base salary, and US roles add 401(k) matching; the Vice President of Business Development posting promises "meaningful equity incentives".
Notable
All employees are expected to travel to project sites for at least one week a year; software engineers go roughly once a year to Zambia, Canada or Arizona, applied scientists 10 to 20 percent of the time, the HSE Lead 10 to 15 percent, the Communities specialist 6 to 10 weeks a year, and hardware engineers 20 to 30 percent with trips that can run three weeks or more.

What to expect from the culture

Three principles are written on the careers page. "We are Bayesians": KoBold states its hypotheses as priors, makes predictions and designs experiments to test them, in business operations as well as exploration. "We are all owners": people are expected to understand context beyond their own team, speak up about concerns and share work early. And a truth-seeking norm: "We think deeply, engage in open dialogue, and embrace being wrong." Field postings repeat it under What We Value: "offering ideas freely and being willing to be wrong" and "receiving constructive and critical feedback well".

The team is deliberately mixed. Berkeleyside reports the founders hired data scientists and software engineers from Google, Apple and Meta to work alongside geoscientists, and postings describe exploration programs co-led by both. Glassdoor reviewers, as surfaced in search highlights, describe "the caliber of people here is exceptionally high across every discipline" and "smart, kind, and modest colleagues with low ego; people are generous with their time and quick to give credit". An Executive Assistant posting describes the working style plainly: a Slack-first culture where things change quickly, executives who work across evenings and weekends when necessary, and an expectation of high ownership and responsiveness.

How to get hired at KoBold Metals

KoBold's process is designed to be slow. An Executive Assistant posting says: "We take hiring seriously, because we're building a team, not just filling a seat," and lays out a timed written assessment testing judgment and communication under pressure, then interviews with the team and finally with the executives the role supports, adding that "the process takes time by design." For software engineers, Dataford's guide built from 12 interview reports describes an hour-long introduction with an engineering lead, three one-hour technical and behavioral interviews, a conversation with an executive, and a take-home architecture question that ends in a written technical design document.

Postings screen for the same things across roles: intellectual curiosity about geology and mineral exploration, ownership from problem definition through delivery, comfort in ambiguous problem spaces, and the ability to explain technical work to domain experts who are not developers. Every candidate needs a valid passport and willingness to travel to Mingomba or another exploration site. Software Engineer postings are level-agnostic but written for engineers with 4-plus years owning production systems; data science roles ask for four years post-PhD or eight post-Master's.
