Who backs Monarch Money

Monarch has raised about $94.8M. A $4.8M seed in July 2021 came from Accel, SignalFire and Clocktower Ventures, followed by a $15M Series A led by Menlo Ventures in early 2022. On May 23, 2025 the company announced a $75M Series B co-led by Wesley Chan at FPV Ventures and Eurie Kim at Forerunner Ventures, with Menlo, Accel, SignalFire and Clocktower all participating, at an $850M valuation that CEO Val Agostino confirmed to CNBC. CNBC called it one of the largest raises for an American consumer fintech in 2025, landing in what it described as a nuclear winter for fintech startups. No new round has been announced since.

What is Monarch Money?

Monarch Money is an all-in-one personal finance platform: budgeting, transaction tracking, net worth, investments, recurring bills, goals and forecasting in one app, with Shared Views so couples can manage money together. It is subscription only, with no ads and no selling of user data, and a premium Monarch Plus tier added in April 2026 brings Morningstar-powered fund analysis and gains-and-losses views. An AI Assistant trained with input from certified financial planners answers questions like why spending jumped last month against the member's own linked accounts.

The company was founded in 2018 and launched publicly in 2021. When Intuit announced in November 2023 that it was shutting down Mint, Monarch shipped an open source Chrome extension to export Mint data and saw signups rise 20 times; paid subscribers grew 20x over the following year. Monarch passed 1 million members in March 2026, more than doubling year over year, and was named to Fast Company's 2026 Most Innovative Companies list. The Wall Street Journal called it the best budgeting app overall for 2024 and PCMag made it an Editors' Choice in 2026.

Why Monarch Money is exciting to work for

Monarch is the company that won the Mint diaspora, and it did so on a business model its founders chose deliberately. Agostino told TechCrunch: "When we started Monarch, my goal was to 'fix' many of the things I felt were broken at Mint. The biggest was the business model. A free personal finance app is simply not a viable business due to the high costs required for financial data aggregation." The product is paid by members rather than advertisers, which is why postings talk about members instead of users.

Remote is the default, not a concession. The careers page describes the setup as "Fully remote. Async-first.", and its stated philosophy is "People do their best work when they have the agency to work in ways that fit their lives."

Pay ranges are printed on every posting and benchmarked against similar-stage growth companies. Beyond salary: best-in-class health coverage and fertility benefits, parental leave that the careers page says supports all paths to parenthood, and a $1,500 annual development stipend through the Monarch Grow learning program.

Monarch Money vibe check

Work week
The whole company takes the first Friday of every month off, twelve three-day weekends a year on top of regular time off.
Hours
The team collaborates synchronously mostly from 9 AM to 2 PM Pacific and works asynchronously outside that window across time zones.
Time off
Unlimited PTO, which the careers page calls flexible time off.
Office
No office and no central hub. Every posting says: "Work wherever you want! As a fully remote company with no central office, we want you to work wherever you are happiest and most productive," with a stipend to set up your workspace.
Equity
Every current posting offers equity and most add a bonus; the stated philosophy is that salary ranges are set by function and level and offers reflect impact.
Notable
Product engineers join an on-call rotation for bugs and errors, and the security team runs a weekly on-call rotation.

What to expect from the culture

Monarch describes itself as "a team of do-ers led by experienced entrepreneurs", and postings are explicit about autonomy: product managers are told "You won't be coordinating; you'll be building", and engineers are expected to "own" the full implementation of whatever they work on. Many team members were Monarch users before they joined, and Simon Ayzman, a Tech Lead Manager, describes being "surrounded by a product-minded team genuinely excited about building thoughtful experiences".

AI fluency is a stated requirement for every hire, not a nice-to-have. The boilerplate on each posting reads: "AI is core to how we operate: every person on the team uses it as a partner to sharpen judgment, move faster, and expand what's possible. We're not looking for tool mastery, we're looking for fluency and curiosity. What matters is that AI is part of how you work today." Even the Commercial Counsel posting asks for someone "curious about (or already using) generative AI tools".

How to get hired at Monarch Money

Monarch's hiring process is printed on each posting. For engineering and operations roles it is a recruiter video call, a hiring manager video call, a take-home assignment, a virtual onsite of two to four interviews, reference checks and an offer. Product manager roles run the onsite before the take-home. Postings ask for senior experience: 5+ years for product managers, 5+ years for security engineers, 8+ years for Commercial Counsel, and a Future Engineering Opportunities listing stays open year-round for engineers who do not match a specific role, with the request to include a note about the work you love to do.

What they screen for is a product-centric mindset ("even our Infra/Platform engineers are passionate about product"), comfort working across the stack, and clear written English for an async team. Monarch is an equal opportunity employer and follows California and San Francisco fair chance hiring laws, so applicants with arrest and conviction records are considered.

What benefits does Monarch Money offer outside the US?

Monarch Money says benefit plans depend on your location. In the United States that means medical, dental and vision coverage and a 401(k) plan; a 2025 posting for product engineers outside the US marked both as US-only, so non-US hires should expect cash, equity and the stipend rather than a health plan. Benefits are for full-time employees only.

Does Monarch Money hire interns or junior engineers?

Sometimes. Monarch Money posted a remote Software Engineering Intern role in the US in 2025 with a shorter process (recruiter call, technical assessment, live coding, then one or two onsite rounds), but there are no intern or junior listings open as of September 2026; current engineering listings ask for 3+ years of full-stack experience at minimum and are titled Senior, Staff or Principal.

How does Monarch Money make money?

Monarch Money charges members directly: $99.99 a year or $14.99 a month for the core product, and $199 a year for Monarch Plus, plus a plan for financial advisors who use it with clients. There is a 7-day trial, no free tier and no credit card offers, and the platform is SOC 2 compliant.
