Who backs Netlify

Netlify has raised $212M across five rounds and was last valued at $2B. The seed was $2.1M in August 2016 from Bloomberg Beta, Tank Hill and the founders of GitHub, Heroku and Rackspace; the $12M Series A in August 2017 was led by Andreessen Horowitz; the $30M Series B in October 2018 was led by Kleiner Perkins with a16z, Slack co-founder Stewart Butterfield and Yelp CEO Jeremy Stoppelman; the $53M Series C in March 2020 was led by EQT Ventures with a16z, Kleiner Perkins and Tom Preston-Werner; and the $105M Series D on 17 November 2021 was led by Bessemer Venture Partners with a16z, BOND, EQT, Kleiner Perkins, Mango Capital and Menlo Ventures at the $2B valuation, when the company had 200 employees and said it would double headcount. The Series D also funded a $10M Jamstack Innovation Fund writing roughly $100,000 checks. Netlify has bought five companies: FeaturePeek (May 2021), OneGraph (November 2021), Quirrel (February 2022), Gatsby (February 2023) and Stackbit (June 2023). There has been no new round since 2021.

What is Netlify?

Netlify is a platform for building, deploying and running websites and web apps: Git-connected builds, a global edge network, serverless Functions, Blobs, Forms, Identity and an AI Gateway that fronts OpenAI, Anthropic and Gemini models. Its CEO coined the term Jamstack in 2015 to describe the decoupled architecture the product was built for, and in January 2025 coined Agent Experience (AX), the idea that a platform now has to be as usable by a coding agent as by a developer. In March 2026 it launched Agent Runners and netlify.new, where a project starts from a prompt and Claude Code, Codex or Gemini CLI builds and ships it from inside the Netlify dashboard, and in April 2026 it put up netlify.ai, a markdown-first site written for agents rather than humans.

The shift changed who signs up. Biilmann told the a16z podcast in January 2026 that daily signups had gone from 3,000 to 16,000, that 96% did not arrive through AI coding tools, and that new users increasingly pick marketer, designer or product manager rather than developer on the signup form. Netlify passed 10 million users in early 2026 and 16 million in June 2026, doubling in ten months, with a million of those arriving in a single three-week stretch. Customers named in 2026 press include Figma, Mattel and Riot Games, and CTO Dana Lawson says the platform powers about 5% of the internet.

Who founded Netlify

Mathias Biilmann, CEO and co-founder. Danish, took a bachelor's in musicology at the University of Copenhagen (1997 to 2003) while working as a freelance music journalist, then moved to Madrid and became a self-taught developer: programmer at Webactiva, then Director of Development and CTO at the Spanish creative startup Domestika. Founded Webpop, a hosted CMS for agencies built on strict separation of content and design, and then the drag-and-drop static host BitBalloon, which became Netlify. Coined the terms Jamstack (2015) and Agent Experience (2025).

Christian Bach, Co-founder and board member. Met Biilmann at Aurehøj Gymnasium north of Copenhagen and studied Film and Media Science at the University of Copenhagen. Spent 14 years in the agency world as founder, CEO and chief digital officer, started Denmark's first hybrid production agency and won more than 20 awards including Cannes Lions; he was Partner and CDO at CONNECTED in Copenhagen when the two decided over the 2013 winter holidays to start Netlify. Diagnosed with Hodgkin's lymphoma before he could move, he beat it and relocated to San Francisco in 2015, served as Chief Strategy and Creative Officer and President, stepped down from his full-time role in September 2024 and remains on the board while angel investing in more than 50 companies.

Why Netlify is exciting to work for

Netlify is a small team riding an unusually large product wave. Lawson said in March 2026 that Netlify has about 110 full-time employees, half of them in R&D, so 40 to 50 people are shipping a platform used by 16 million accounts and growing by 16,000 signups a day. The founder still submits pull requests built entirely through prompting, and Lawson describes the engineering job as a continuous human-agent loop: "This isn't replacing engineers, it's amplifying everybody's ability to be a builder." If you want to work on what a deploy platform looks like when the first user of every project is an agent, this is one of the few places doing it at scale.

The company is remote-first by construction, not by pandemic. The careers page says "we're not just remote-friendly: we're remote-first and fully distributed by design," and the published Distributed Culture page commits to giving people who work from home "an equal opportunity to influence culture across the org." Benefits include a home office setup stipend, a monthly reimbursement for internet, mobile or a co-working space, an annual education budget for courses and conferences, and medical, dental and vision for dependents.

Netlify vibe check

Hours
Teams self-organize around roughly three hours of shared core time within their time zone cluster, per CTO Dana Lawson; on Comparably, 67% of 14 responding employees reported 10-hour days and 33% reported 8 (2024).
Time off
Unlimited vacation, plus parental leave for both birthing and non-birthing parents.
Office
No office attendance expected anywhere; there is an annual budget for each person to meet in person with both their home team and their functional team, a quarterly leadership offsite (Portland in August 2026), and an annual all-hands.
Pace
Reviews are middling: Glassdoor 3.1/5 on 43 reviews, and Blind 3.0/5 on 17 reviews with 3.3 for work-life balance and 2.5 for management, where the most-cited complaint is leadership through the 2023 to 2024 acquisitions and layoffs (Blind, November 2024).
Equity
Every employee gets stock options; during the 2023 restructuring Netlify waived the one-year cliff for newer employees and extended the exercise window to seven years.

What to expect from the culture

Netlify has four values and Biilmann says they "weren't invented in a strategy offsite": be inclusive, care deeply and have fun, own it ship it, and simplify. On ownership he writes: "If you take ownership of something, you better ship it," and describes wanting pilots rather than passengers. On fun, he and Bach used to look each other in the eye every quarter and ask whether the journey was still fun, on the theory that people who are not having fun are not doing their best work. Simplify has become his stated hiring principle: "Looking for simplifiers has become one of my core hiring principles."

The operating style is written and public. Lawson: "We try to follow a written culture... it's incredibly important to have that record," with most conversations in open Slack channels because "there's only far and few that should be in private DMs," and a rule of "no decisions by committees." The Distributed Culture page adds regular cross-functional meetings to avoid silos and Donut pairings in Slack to keep people meeting colleagues they do not work with. Lawson also says technical debt is unavoidable when building fast and that she will not spend time breaking down monoliths purely to undo past choices.

Biilmann is unusually public about the company's mistakes. After Wired put Netlify in a headline about AI-built apps leaking data in September 2026, he wrote "They were right to," noted that nobody broke in and users had simply hit publish on public-by-default sites, and made every site on Netlify private by default. The 2023 restructuring memo to staff was likewise published on the company blog in full.

How to get hired at Netlify

Netlify hires through Greenhouse and, as of September 2026, lists two things: a Finance Manager role and a Talent Community application for people who want to be considered for future openings; Biilmann said in July 2026 that the company was hiring for several roles. The Distributed Culture page states the first filter: "we prioritize their ability to function well in a remote culture as an absolute must." Lawson looks for "curious people that are open-minded" with a growth mindset, and the current Finance posting asks for 5+ years in FP&A and hands-on experience building AI workflows for finance work, including knowing where AI fails.

The interview is run as a conversation. Netlify's talent team wrote that each session opens with an introduction to what they do, moves into a structured focus area for the role and deliberately leaves time for your questions, that the recruiter's job is to be "your biggest champion," and that you should expect several check-in calls and emails so you always know where you stand; one engineer said she was sent a guide describing every interview and a timeline before it started. Engineering loops have historically used a practical project rather than trivia: a scoped React app consuming an API for one front-end hire, and for a platform hire a working exercise that was later contributed upstream to Apache Traffic Server. Candidates outside the United States or in premium markets are told to discuss the range with their talent contact.

Netlify hiring FAQ

How much does Netlify pay?

Netlify's only posted band in September 2026 is $123,000 to $166,000 for a Finance Manager in most US locations, with the offer depending on expertise, experience, internal equity and geography, plus participation in the equity plan. Some roles are commission-eligible, and the careers page describes salaries as market-based with location variations.

Has Netlify had layoffs?

Yes. Netlify cut 48 of about 300 people (16%) on 1 December 2022 and another 46 on 13 July 2023, when Biilmann's memo said the company had added management layers from 2020 to 2023 and would refocus product and engineering investment on Enterprise customers, and a further reduction was reported on Blind in late May 2024.

What is Netlify's tech stack?

Go for most services, with a Rails application still serving the origin path that engineering has been extracting into Go tiers, Rust for edge handlers, a C++ redirects library used through CGO, and Apache Traffic Server as the HTTP proxy. Builds run in Firecracker microVMs that replaced the old Kubernetes-based system, with workers pulling jobs from Redis and an overlay filesystem sharing base images across builds. The CDN spans six cloud providers and origin can fail over between Google Cloud, AWS and Rackspace.

Do you need AI skills to work at Netlify?

For current roles, yes. The Finance Manager posting expects the hire to automate close and forecast work with AI and to know where its output fails, engineers run agents that generate tests, detect faults, propose fixes and open pull requests inside constraints and guardrails, and the CTO uses AI to keep the company's written culture documentation current.

How does Netlify make money?

Netlify sells usage rather than seats. In April 2026 it dropped per-seat pricing, making Pro a flat $20 a month with unlimited seats, removing Git contributor fees and metering on bandwidth, build minutes and credits instead, a change it said left 98% of customers paying the same or less. Free plans include 300 credits a month across the platform, the AI Gateway converts $1 of model usage into 180 credits, and enterprise plans add an Internal Builder seat with governance and role-based access, domain governance and domain capture.
