Who backs Stream

Stream's job postings say it has raised over $58.25 million. The documented rounds: a seed led by Arthur Ventures, a $15M Series A in August 2020 led by GGV Capital (whose Tiffany Luck joined the board), and a $38M Series B in March 2021 led by Felicis Ventures' Aydin Senkut, with participation from GGV Capital, 01 Advisors and Amsterdam-based Knight Capital. Angels include Datadog CEO Olivier Pomel and GitHub co-founder Tom Preston-Werner. In its September 2026 Hacker News post Stream described itself as default alive with healthy revenue.

What is Stream?

Stream builds the real-time infrastructure that other apps' social features run on: chat messaging, video and audio calling, activity feeds, AI moderation and, since 2025, Vision Agents for real-time voice and video AI. Developers integrate it through APIs and SDKs instead of building chat or feeds from scratch, and the platform now serves over a billion end users across thousands of apps, processing billions of API requests per month. Customers named in its 2026 hiring materials include Strava, Nextdoor, Patreon, Midjourney, Bumble and eBay.

The company was co-founded in Amsterdam by CEO Thierry Schellenbach and CTO Tommaso Barbugli, went through Techstars, and is now headquartered in Boulder, Colorado, with engineering hubs in Amsterdam, Skopje (North Macedonia) and Toronto. The backend is written in Go, with CockroachDB, RocksDB, WebRTC, Raft and Redis underneath, running on an edge network of servers around the world. As of its October 2026 job postings the team is 120+ people across 35 nationalities.

Who founded Stream

Thierry Schellenbach, Co-founder and CEO. Co-founded Stream in Amsterdam with Tommaso Barbugli in 2015, per TechCrunch, after the pair worked on feed technology that became the open source Stream Framework. Took the company through Techstars and later moved its headquarters to Boulder, Colorado. He remains publicly hands-on, writing on Stream's blog about Go engineering and AI-assisted development.

Tommaso Barbugli, Co-founder and CTO. Co-founded Stream in Amsterdam in 2015 and leads the technical side, heading the substantial Amsterdam engineering team, per TechCrunch's 2021 coverage.

Where does Stream hire remotely?

Headquarters are in Boulder, Colorado, with offices in Amsterdam, Skopje (North Macedonia) and Toronto. Roles are primarily hybrid and based in the Netherlands, the US, North Macedonia or Canada; Boulder roles specify three days a week in the office. Per the company's September 2026 hiring post, exemptions for remote work within the EU may apply to specific cases.

Why Stream is exciting to work for

The engineering pitch is scale and difficulty: a Go-based video SFU, chat, feeds and moderation APIs serving apps with millions of concurrent users, where your work reaches production traffic immediately. The September 2026 Hacker News post leads with high-scale, difficult engineering, an edge network of servers around the world, and the fact that all managers are hands-on and capable engineers.

Stream was named one of Built In's Best Midsize Places to Work 2026 and Best Colorado Midsize Places to Work, per the company's January 2026 announcement. Its stated values center on achieving mastery of your domain, building lasting relationships, transparency, and solving problems independently while asking for help when needed.

What to expect from the culture

This is a hybrid company, not a remote-first one: roles are based in the Amsterdam, Boulder, Skopje or Toronto offices, and Boulder postings specify three days a week in the office. The careers page describes Stream as proudly designed and built in Boulder and Amsterdam with a global remote team, and the September 2026 Hacker News post says exemptions for remote work within the EU may apply to specific cases.

The 2026 job descriptions describe small teams with short paths to production, genuine end-to-end ownership (approach, architecture, evaluation, and what ships), and a fast, sometimes hectic environment mid-migration to GCP on the data side. CEO Thierry Schellenbach has written publicly about the team's AI-assisted development practices with strong guardrails and docs.

How to get hired at Stream

Jobs are listed on Stream's Ashby board at https://jobs.ashbyhq.com/stream. In September 2026 the company posted four engineering roles on Hacker News (Staff Backend Engineer AI, Senior Infrastructure Engineer, Lead Data Engineer, Senior React SDK Developer); as of early October 2026 the publicly listed board shows Lead Data Engineer (Boulder, hybrid), Solutions Consultant II Trust and Safety (Remote US) and a Boulder-based Sales Development Representative, so individual openings move quickly.

Stream sponsors visas for the Netherlands. Pay bands are not published on the job postings. No interview process is published; postings emphasize hands-on engineering depth in Go and distributed systems for backend roles.
