Supabase publishes five traits it hires for: Egoless, Kaizen mindset, Truth seeking, Batteries included and Undeniable. Ant Wilson's 2022 post "Who We Hire" is blunter than the careers page: "A willingness to do the schlep is essential to working at Supabase," the most valued people are "Supa-unblockers" who take work off your plate, and at the time everyone from the CFO to the infra team had front-line support listed first in their job description. Paul Copplestone described the same thing to First Round: an "egoless" but "hyper-competitive" culture, and "I don't want to work with assholes."
Bias to action is the founding story. Wilson recalls that after an all-day whiteboarding session on 6 January 2020, Copplestone opened his laptop and started coding while the kettle boiled, and that there would never be "a whiff of 'Let's meet next week to discuss'." The stated hiring rule from the 2023 remote post is "Hire people who are: Smart, Get Things Done. Everything else is a Nice to Have. Including proximity." The company prefers hiring ex-founders, and in 2022 it had no managers at all; that has changed with scale, and current postings include an Engineering Manager for Billing who runs 1:1s, performance reviews and hiring.
Launch Weeks are the heartbeat and Supabase is open that they cost something. Wilson wrote in 2021 that "it's inevitable that some team members will have pulled long days and nights to get their feature out the door," that each cycle therefore ends with downtime and maintenance mode, and that launch adrenaline often spills into the following weeks before people rest. Employee reviews echo it: "Great company, can be tiring" and "heavy focus on launch weeks versus fundamentals of reliability and automation."
