Engineering Manager
Carrum Health
Simplifies healthcare payments via bundled solution linking employers to providers.
Describe your next role, cut the noise
At Carrum Health, we have built a unique marketplace for specialty care with unparalleled patient experience
Since 2014, we have been rewiring a fundamentally broken healthcare system. By connecting large employers directly with the nation's top-tier providers, our platform replaces a flawed fee-for-service model with one that actually works. If you are passionate about solving complex economic problems, driving systemic change in our healthcare system, and thriving in a people-first culture, we want you on our team. As a high-growth health tech company, we are seeking high-performing, exceptional talent to scale our platform and ensure that anyone in the country facing a specialty procedure has access to the life-changing Carrum benefit.
Our marketplace creates massive value for all stakeholders:
For Employers (Demand): Predictable, transparent pricing that slashes specialty care costs by up to 45% and eliminates waste
For Providers (Supply): Ability to gain market share while reducing administrative burden, empowering top-tier doctors to focus completely on delivering optimal care.
For Members (Users): A life-changing benefit with dedicated concierges, VIP access to the nation's best specialists, and little-to-no out-of-pocket costs.
The salary range for this role is $190,000 - $250,000 depending on geography and level of experience, plus equity and an annual bonus.
We are looking for a business-minded, hands-on engineering leader to lead a brand-new product pod (a small, cross-functional team with its own product manager, engineers, and business owner) that will take a new product area from zero to market.
This is a founding-leader role. You will start with a small founding team of senior engineers, a product manager, and a general manager who owns the business, and the team will expand as the product scales. Reporting to the VP of Engineering, you will have direct visibility with company leadership and real influence over how Carrum launches new products.
We are not looking for someone who only ships what they are handed. We want a leader who obsesses over the member experience, instruments every step of the funnel, and works alongside the product team to research where the opportunities are before deciding what to build. You should care as much about whether members use the product and clients buy it as about whether it ships.
Because the product is new, the role is a true player-coach. You will set the technical direction, write and review code, and run delivery, while hiring and coaching the engineers who join you. Early on you will spend most of your time building. Over the year, the balance shifts toward leading.
Parts of the product will live inside our core Ruby on Rails services, and parts will be new. You will own a cross-cutting member experience that touches several parts of the platform, which means collaborating closely with our other product pods while keeping clear ownership of your own. Designing those boundaries well, and knowing when to build versus buy, is central to the job.
Our stack is Ruby on Rails in a service-oriented architecture, React and React Native on the front end, PostgreSQL, and Docker. You will work across both AWS and Azure.
You’re excited about this opportunity because you will...
Take a new Carrum product from an idea to paying clients and real members.
Build and lead a team from the ground up.
Work with a cross-functional group across product, other pods, network, care operations, finance, and client implementation to solve problems that directly affect members.
What You Will Do
1. Take a new product from zero to market
Own the end-to-end technical delivery of a new Carrum product: the member-facing experience, internal tooling for our care team, partner integrations, and the data that proves the product works.
Make the early architecture calls: service boundaries, what lives in our existing Rails services versus new ones, and what we build versus buy.
Ship a credible, demo-ready front end, then turn it into a production system that real members and clients depend on.
Define "what's real when" and hold the line on it, so sales, marketing, and implementation teams promise only what the product can deliver by each client's start date.
2. Obsess over the member experience and the funnel
Instrument the member journey from first touch to completed care, so the team can see drop-off, time to next step, and where members get stuck.
Partner with the product team on research and discovery: talk to members and care navigators, study the data, and bring opportunities to the roadmap rather than waiting for them.
Run a tight loop of ship, measure, learn. Treat conversion, time to care, and member satisfaction as engineering outcomes, not someone else's metrics.
3. Build and lead the team
Hire, onboard, and coach a small team of senior engineers. Hold a high bar; we would rather hire slowly than hire wrong.
Create the operating rhythm for the pod: planning, delivery cadence, production ownership, and incident response.
Build a psychologically safe team where engineers do their best work, with clear ownership and room to grow.
4. Stay hands-on
Write production code every week, especially early on. You are the tech lead as well as the manager.
Lead design reviews and code reviews, and set the standard for testing, observability, security, and documentation.
Use AI developer tools as a default part of how you and your team build, and help the team adopt agentic engineering practices responsibly.
5. Work across the company
Partner closely with the pod's product manager and general manager to turn business goals into a sequenced technical plan with honest trade-offs.
Work closely with other Engineering Managers and Product leaders so your team's work aligns with the broader platform architecture and has impact beyond your pod.
Represent the pod to leadership: status, risks, and what you need, without surprises.
Success in the First Year Looks Like
A sellable product: something sales can demo, price, and put in front of clients with confidence.
The product live in production with its first clients, with integrations, billing flow, and member support working end to end.
A fully instrumented member funnel, with baselines established and at least one measurable conversion improvement shipped from your team's own research.
A clear plan and the right architecture to scale.
A team of senior engineers hired and ramped, with a healthy delivery cadence and production ownership established.
A reputation across the company as the leader who tells the truth about what will ship and then ships it.
We’re excited about you because…
You have launched something from zero. You have been the technical lead or founding engineer on a 0→1 product that reached real customers, ideally inside a company that already had an existing platform to integrate with.
You have done this at a growth-stage company. You have built and led at a company scaling from early product-market fit through rapid growth, where the team, the customer base, and the systems were all changing at once. You know how to make progress when the process isn't written yet.
You think like an owner of the business. You understand how the product makes money, who buys it, and what makes members use it. You bring opportunities to the product team, not just estimates.
You obsess over user experience and measure it. You have instrumented a funnel, used the data to find the drop-off, and shipped the fix. You are passionate about building great user experiences that are accessible to a wide variety of users.
You have management experience. You have 4+ years leading engineering teams, including hiring, performance management, and growing engineers' careers. You have managed a mix of full-time employees and contractors.
You are a full-stack expert who wants to stay hands-on. You have 8+ years of engineering experience in a robust, highly available, multi-service environment, with production experience in Ruby on Rails, React, PostgreSQL, and Docker.
You are comfortable in the cloud. You have built on core AWS services and are comfortable working in Azure as well.
You have built on top of other people's platforms. You have integrated third-party APIs into a product people depend on, and you know how to design clean boundaries so your product isn't coupled to any one vendor's API.
You leverage AI for velocity. You use AI developer tools daily and have opinions about where they help and where they do not.
You are disciplined about scope and sequencing. You can take an ambitious date, decide what is real and what is mocked, and communicate that clearly to non-engineers.
You know how to build in a regulated space. You have shipped software handling sensitive data and understand HIPAA and SOC 2 obligations in practice, not just in theory.
You have strong interpersonal skills. You are organized, empathetic, direct, and curious, and you build trust across the organization.
